God, I love Rotterdam West. I was born here, I live here and – let’s face it – my apartment is so much under water I’ll probably die here as well. Which is fine by me, because my neighborhood has been gentrifying at a dizzying pace these last few years. Case in point: the building on the corner of ’s Gravendijkwal and Nieuwe Binnenweg, the two streets that lie at the epicenter of Rotterdam West. In the Eighties and Nineties, it was the home of Beat Corner and Full Moon, two of Rotterdam’s most legendary night clubs like EVER. And then around 2000, the ground floor was transformed into a hip and happening California-slash-sushi fusion restaurant called Tampopo – or Tamponpon, as my brother used to call it (har, har). I took out a dashing fellow for dinner there once. You see, I was madly in love with him and quietly fantasized about marrying him. Tampopo closed after only a few years, unfortunately. It was replaced by Cappadocia and then Cappocodocia 2 – twenty-four hour Turkish restaurants that were as seedy as they were greasy. Now let’s fast forward to 2016 – Cappadocia 2 closed earlier this year and the gods of gentrification were kind enough to replace it with an all-new organic restaurant called Gys Rotterdam – here comes the neighborhood!
Now my dearest reader, I don’t know how old you are when you read this blogpost. But at the moment I’m writing it, I’m forty-six years old – which means I should be feeling middle-aged. Except I don’t. Because even though I don’t go out to night clubs like Beat Corner or Full Moon anymore, I do still enjoy going to every new bar and restaurant my neck of the woods has to offer – like Gys Rotterdam. And about that dashing fellow I once took out for dinner at Tampopo? I’m very happy to report I married him on May 15, 2009 and that I took him out for dinner at the very same address for our seventh wedding anniversary this weekend. Thanks for the memories, Gys Rotterdam!
Beat Corner, Tampopo, Cappadocia 1 and 2 are all gone – but luckily we have Gys Rotterdam now!
Gys Rotterdam is a great addition to my neighborhood of Rotterdam West.
Gys Rotterdam was packed only a week after it opened – I only had a few minutes to take a picture of this empty table…
…before these new guests sat down for a drink and a nice organic meal!
Many of the details of Gys Rotterdam were copied from its sister location in the town of Utrecht – like these shelves and plants by Spruitje.
The Big Brother glass lamp and greenhouse on the right looks pretty impressive IRL – don’t you think?
I had a juicy vegan lentil burger – who needs meat, right?
And this delicious vegan ‘proeverij’ only sets you back 6 euro’s – an absolute steal, if you ask me!
