On the train to Amsterdam again, this time for the second lesson of my teaching assignment at the Artemis Academie. I spent a lot of time this weekend thinking about my role as a teacher. It is such a wonderful and frightening challenge to guide of group of nineteen first-year students and to get them to understand the basics of how images work and what they can do. To makes things a bit easier, I have decided that today’s class needs a theme, so here we go: Students, the eye has to travel – just like in the Diana Vreeland documentary. Leave all the cliché images behind you and dare to go into uncharted territory. We’re going to leave the safe haven of today’s glossy fashion magazines and travel to different times, places and ideas. And along the way, I’ll do my best to show all the useful shortcuts, to make you leave the beaten path and to provide you a glimpse of what you can achieve if they set their mind to it. My train is pulling into the station now – and I can’t wait to see you again.
