“Pinterest is porn with prettier pictures” – My thoughts one year later

Remember this blogpost I wrote last August about my dislike of Pinterest? I’m still not a big fan – even though I saw a presentation by the French Pinterest team last weekend at The Hive Bloggers Conference. One of the things they said was that Google is about ‘searching’ and Pinterest is about ‘discovering’. After all, you search Google for concrete information and you discover pictures you like on Pinterest. I gave this theory some thought this week and ended up thinking – no, they’ve got it wrong. At least in the class I’ve been teaching at the Artemis Styling Academie for the last months. It’s unbelievably frustrating to see that a lot of students get almost all their inspiration from Pinterest. Or rather from SEARCHING Pinterest instead of DISCOVERING stuff in magazines, on the street, in shops or museums. Thankfully, I had a bit of a breakthrough last week when I 聽opened one – ONE! – magazine that I found on the table that provided enough new visual cues for at least five projects my class was working on – just by flipping through the pages. So there! Anyway, I had to get that off my chest apparently. Here’s my original rant about Pinterest. Enjoy your weekend!聽

Pinterest is porn with prettier pictures

I hate Pinterest. There, I’ve said it. As much as I want – need! – to build an audience for my blog, I simply cannot deny the feeling that I really, really don’t like Pinterest. At all. I’ve thought long and hard about where my dislike comes from and this is what I came up with. So, here goes. It’s porn with prettier pictures. It’s all visual, there’s no text, no context. It’s like fast-forwarding through the foreplay just to see the money shot. And did you notice people on Pinterest rarely mention who took the picture or even where they got it from? Just like porn! Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been doing the same thing – I see a pretty picture without a source and I repin it anyway. Makes me feel kind of dirty. Just like porn. So, why do I use Pinterest? Frankly, I’ve become a little addicted. And I bet you have, too. After all, the hottest picture of the day is always on the next page down right? Need I even say it? Just like porn!

PS: I’ve included a little preview of the stuff I’ve been pinning lately. You might want to check out the one hundred per cent context free Interiorator Pinterest page! 馃槈
