Remember two years ago when all of a sudden everyone including me was besotted by Sottsass? Not long after that, I took some pictures of Memphis design at Designmuseum Gent that we’re quite a hit on Pinterest. Oh and then last year there was the überhip Gevonden op Marktplaats Salon in Amsterdam with more Memphis (and Hollywood Regency) than you can shake a stick at. Okay, now picture me last month in Milan where the Kartell flagship store had gone full-tilt Memphis with a tribute to Ettore Sottsass. Memphis was at its peak hotness, a fruit ripe for the picking for all the mid-range design stores that were wondering what the theme of their next collection was going to be. If there is one department store chain that works this way, it’s Hema. They’re currently still in their knock-off Hay phase, but I’m sure they’ll move on at some point to Memphis. At which point, I’ll probably have moved on myself to God knows whatever trend is next. For now though, I’m going to take one more look at pictures I took in Milan and enjoy Memphis at its peak.
