‘I think it’s tacky!’ – someone behind me whispered as we were standing in the joint exhibition stand of Boca do Lobo and Lladró at IMM Cologne. I turned around and saw two standard issue hipster men looking in amazement at all the shiny opulence before them. Sure, I understood where they were coming from. If you’re into the type of minimalist Scandinavian design where color and a sense of humor are totally verboten then I guess that Boca do Lobo and Lladró will make your head explode like that guy in Scanners. But you know what? I think brands should elicit reactions like that. It means you’re being noticed – unlike the other 99,9 per cent of exhibition stands I walked past. So many brands are designing the same sleep-inducing stuff nowadays, it’s hard to tell which brand is which. Boca do Lobo and Lladró on the other hand are like these two big, lovable aunts who push the envelope with their uniquely garish style and don’t care one bit if two boring hipsters half their age call them tacky, whacky or anything else. They’ve been around the block, they do their own thing because they know their thing works. And they totally mopped the floor with the competition at IMM. So there!
