Amsterdam Light Festival 2015 – Lights! Camera! Beatrix!
All of the lights! When I received an invitation for the 2015 edition of the Amsterdam Light Festival, I just knew I had to go. Not once. mind you. but twice. On Thursday I did the press preview tour. And then last Saturday I was at the opening ceremony – performed by none other than HRH Princess Beatrix. Fancy schmancy, you say? I hear you! The thing is though I never had the opportunity to meet royalty. I also thought it would a fun experience to stand in the professional photographers’ area. Let me show you a selection of what I saw!

All aboard! The Amsterdam Light Festival press preview
The tour started in the courtyard of the Sofitel Legend The Grand Hotel with a word of welcome by Felix Guttmann and Rogier van der Heide. I arrived fashionably late (not my thing usually) so this is the best picture I could take.
Unlike last year’s press preview of the Amsterdam Light Festival, we sailed on an open barge. The building on the left is the Sofitel Legend The Grand. What a beauty, right? I had an amazing dinner there a while ago, by the way.
On our way to the first part of the Water Colors route. Isn’t Amsterdam beautiful at night?
A Temple of Two Cities by Vendel & De Wolf
These refugees were at the Amsterdam Light Festival for the second time in a row. Notice how only the child is optimistic.
My absolute favorite was Northern Light by Aleksandra Stratimirovia
Holon Light by Michiel Martens and Jetske Visser.
Talking Heads by Victor Vicsek
Paths Crossing by Ralph Westerhof
Lights! Camera! Beatrix! At the official opening ceremony of the Amsterdam Light Festival
And then last Saturday I learned that although I may be pretty good at interior photography, I’m totally worthless when it comes to taking a halfway decent picture of Princess Beatrix. Sorry, Your Majesty! It was a great experience though to be standing at the photographers pit next to the stage where our beloved Princess performed the opening ceremony of the Amsterdam Light Festival.
That’s the lever you have to pull to open the festival, your majesty.
You, mean like this?
Gently, your majesty!
By all means please don’t yank it off, your majesty!
